Brebes, 17 August 2023 — To celebrate Indonesian Independence Day 2023, Square Resources Holdings Singapore Pte Ltd. joins forces with Indonesia Indah Foundation (IIF) to strengthen the coastline of Pandansari, Kaliwlingi Village, in Brebes, Central Java. Over the course of three years, Square Resources Holding Singapore Pte Ltd. will plant 150,000 mangrove seedlings in Kaliwlingi Village to protect coastlines and equip locals with education on sustainability and eco-tourism.

The coast of Pandansari, Kaliwlingi Village, has been fighting the problem of coastal abrasion (from 1963 to 2009) and erosion. As one of the areas experiencing severe abrasion in the Brebes Regency, the abrasion in Pandansari to date has reached extreme levels, covering 800 hectares of productive land that has been completely eroded by seawater.

One possible preventive effort is to plant or reforest mangrove trees along the coastline. The impact of this abrasion was directly felt by the residents of Kaliwlingi, who experienced rising sea levels and a loss of aquaculture production land.

Over the course of three years, the mangrove planting program run by IIF together with KMPHP Mangrovesari, aims to slowly but surely equip these coastal villages with the habitat and marine ecosystem that previously flourished in this region. Local school children and local teachers at national schools in the area are also being educated on environmental sustainability under IIF’s Saya Pahlawan Lingkungan (I’m an Environmental Hero) education program. Local villagers are also being trained as eco-tourism guides, in an effort to empower them to protect the coastline and newly planted forests for decades to come.

Square Resources Holding Singapore Pte Ltd. has been supporting activities organised by IIF since 2019 through the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The Company first started supporting Hari Bersih Indonesia, IIF’s annual national-scale clean-up day to raise awareness of the littering, and plastic waste problem in Indonesia, before becoming an official Foundation Partner in 2020.

“Square is very pleased to support Indonesia Indah Foundation and its efforts to create sustainable change. We believe mangrove reforestation, tied with sustainability education, can uplift local communities, providing them with knowledge and resources to become stewards of their environment, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience,” said Staffan Ever, Managing Director of Square Resources Holding Singapore Pte Ltd.

Last year, Square Resources Holding Singapore Pte Ltd. also participated in the planting of 10,000 mangrove seedlings in Pandansari, Kaliwlingi village, Brebes, Central Java. To date, the Company has donated 60,000 mangrove trees in this region, with the aim to plant 160,000 trees by the year 2025.

Angela Jelita Richardson, Co-Founder of Indonesia Indah Foundation expressed her excitement about the partnership. “Our continued collaboration with Square Resources to support the locals and environment in the Brebes Regency aligns perfectly with our vision of a sustainable future for Indonesia. By investing in teacher training, ecotourism, fostering ecological conservation and restoration, we aim to create a positive impact that will resonate for future generations,” said Angela

Head of Education, Youth and Sports Agency in the Brebes Regency, Ibu Caridah, S.Pd. M.Pd, warmly welcomes and is grateful for the implementation of the SPL program to national schools in her district. “Equipped with the modules provided, we can implement environmental education within our school, thereby assuming responsibility for waste management. Let us join forces, as waste management remains a collective responsibility we all share,” said Caridah.
